The thumb wheel rides in a plastic bearing slot. It won't stay in place and drops down (when rolled naturally from the top) and totally locks the instrument up. An embarassing tool from a (formerly?) great company. Made in China. It may be the Starrett design rather than Made in China that is the problem--not clear. If you really want something that doesn't work very well, this qualifies. ;-) I'm returning it for a refund and ordering the similar (but maybe it actually works!) Mitutoyo unit.
